Either way, you need to check really carefully as the last thing you want is for a page to be missing, or repeated. This doesn’t have to be a problem, however. If you find writing problematic, I highly recommend that you write one chapter for the presentation of data and a second chapter for data analysis. Chapter 11 Managing Your Argument: Writing Up Your Non- Empirical Dissertation In This Chapter ▶ Understanding the key elements of your dissertation ▶ Setting out your ideas ▶ Constructing opposing arguments ▶ Drawing conclusions A re you a person who enjoys a good argument? Then writing up a non-empirical dissertation is likely to be a rewarding experience. Sketching out what you need to say and structuring the presentation of your thoughts and ideas can be done in a number of ways but the two most popular methods are linear planning and concept planning (sometimes known as ‘mind-mapping’). Having enough time to pursue your new idea depends on how far away the topic is from what you’ve already covered in your research and how long you’ve got until the submission date. Get going by summarising your data as you go – for example, creating a Word file noting all the factual details of your interviews such as who you spoke to, length of discussion, location and other basic details. Posters should be dotted around the campus, you should have leaflets from the union and information online. (You’ve probably just talked yourself into doing an MA!) However, it’s possible that your ‘off-topic’ idea can impact positively on your dissertation and you may need to seriously consider following the idea through, even if that means shifting the direction of your work. The emotions linked to procrastination vary from person to person, but you’re likely to be feeling anxious, guilty and overwhelmed. Finalising your research question After thinking through your philosophical standpoint and the kinds of data you’re going to need, you now have a clear understanding of what your research question involves. Here are some suggestions for making the leap from description to analysis: ✓ Don’t just say where your data comes from and talk about the type of data – evaluate what’s good and bad about your data. Some university regulations require a footnote to be on the exact same page as the reference to it, whereas others are less fussy. Secondary Research Thesis 2025. Cut down and then cut it out. Some examiners absolutely hate flicking back and forth (with just eyes, or with eyes and hands) and those of us who don’t mind them don’t really miss them if there aren’t any at all. Also, look through the chapters, examining how students refer to books, journals, websites, reports and other sources in the body of their dissertations. You’re going to need to make a decision based on whether you’re writing an empirical or non-empirical dissertation, but what is most important is that you avoid a meandering and indistinct ramble through theorists’ ideas without really concluding anything of value. Chapter 13: Writing Effectively 235 A good way to evaluate your writing is to run a readability test, which is a simple procedure that’s normally found in your software. In a non-empirical dissertation, evaluating ideas and lines of argument is obviously your main concern. You don’t need it all before you start writing. Make it part of your routine to do the following: ✓ Brisk walking ✓ Vacuuming and other vigorous housework ✓ Walking up stairs instead of using lifts ✓ Taking the long route when walking around campus ✓ Gardening ✓ Walking up moving escalators ✓ Helping with DIY ✓ Walking the dog The main point is just to try and get moving. Non-empirical dissertations Making the choice to do a non-empirical dissertation shouldn’t be taken lightly. ✓ A general phenomenon? If your study is about what’s happening generally, you’re going to be making a survey and needing statistics or centrally produced information covering a wide range of people.

It’s your hypothesis you’re testing. ✓ Sidebars, the shaded grey boxes you see from time to time, point out information which might come in handy, but doesn’t qualify as essential reading. ✓ Get out your diary and plan in any work you need to do, highlighting your deadline but also making a note a few days before the deadline to finish the draft of whatever you’re being asked to hand in to your supervisor. ✓ Explanation: Looking at patterns, relationships or phenomena. As part of the discussion, you ask them what they don’t like about galleries and they answer high- lighting the costs of the café, the generally quiet atmosphere and the prices in the gift shop. Once you get started on your data collection, you may find that you need to revise your schedule because some interviews or questionnaires can take longer than you first expected. Secondary Research Thesis 2025. Journal articles are generally easier to skim as they’re short and include abstracts and conclusions summarising the subject being discussed.

Part IV: Writing and Polishing Your Work 206 In this section I take you through the key elements of your dissertation. If your dissertation appears to be going off course, see the section ‘Turning to Troubleshooting’ at the end of this chapter. They also know how best to approach tutors and support staff if required. This is true even once your dissertation is printed, bound and submitted. You can be so anxious that everything goes well that you forget to take notes and as soon as you leave the meeting you realise you’ve forgotten half of what your supervisor has been saying. ✓ Current thinking: You have an excellent opportunity of picking up the latest thinking and ideas before they reach book form. You need to bear in mind that different newspapers have different political leanings and therefore bias. Go through the following checklist, considering each point and hopefully ticking each of the boxes: ✓ Your question and the field of study: ❑ You’ve chosen an area that’s significant in your field ❑ A reasonable body of literature exists forming a context for your work ❑ Your supervisor and fellow students can see the value and relevance of your ideas ❑ The area is worth making the effort to research Fusing positivist and relativist viewpoints One student I was supervising managed to make use of positivist and relativist standpoints in her dissertation. ’) In the following list I show you some of the characteristics of analysis – in the list ‘data’ applies to empirical studies as well as including theories and arguments you come up with in non-empirical work: Chapter 9: Analysing Data and Drawing Conclusions 169 ✓ Getting some distance from the data, looking at the data from different viewpoints and being objective.
